water is abundant in the area but unsafe due to high bacterial levels caused by organic pollutants, both human and animal, discharged into natural water ways
Pomabamba is a small city situated about 3000m above sea level and 600 km from Lima, the capital of Peru. Getting to Pomabamba is only possible along an often rough mountain road using a robust four wheel drive vehicle.
The priests of the Oblate Fathers of St. Joseph are very active in Pomabamba and in addition to their spiritual duties they carry out many social welfare projects for and on behalf of the people in the Parish of St. John the Baptist and the town as a whole.
For example, water is abundant in the area but unsafe due to high bacterial levels caused by organic pollutants, both human and animal, discharged into natural water ways. Unfortunately even the tap water is unhygienic. With this reality in mind and with the aim of providing the local community with a reliable water supply, thereby lowering risks of infections and disease due to the use of contaminated water, the fathers’ H2Ohhh! project was launched. Having identified the problem, Euro Mec Water Group was then asked by the Family of San Giuseppe Marello of the Parish of St. Giuseppe Artigiano in Florence, Italy, project coordinators, to provide the right water treatment solution for the Mission in Peru.
Euro Mec Water Group supplied and installed in Pomabamba a compact and mobile water purification unit based on user friendly ultrafiltration and disinfection technologies. The water treatment system is installed and operates in the Mission complex but is regularly transported via pick up to two collages for youth in poverty. Furthermore free safe drinking water is available from four fountains on the outside of the mission complex ensuring that as many parishioners as possible have access to the improved water supply.
